I have always been interested in how and why teachers choose their careers. I wonder why art teachers choose art or why math teachers choose math. Mostly, I wonder how fine arts teachers choose what they love. One can love a band, while others love an orchestra or a chorus.
She chose theatre. A class where every student can show their true nature. Building confidence in front of audiences and being themselves.
The “she” is Mrs. Lejeune, Cartersville High School’s wonderful and cheerful theatre teacher. When I had her class, I opened up, and it really did feel like everyone else did too.
I emailed her about why she chose to teach theatre, as well as some other questions about the CHS theatre program.
Q1 : Why Theatre?
“As soon as I saw my first professional production (Wicked at the Fox Theatre), I knew that this was something that I had to do, whether it was behind the scenes or on stage. I just wanted to be involved!”
Q2 : What is your favorite thing about Theatre?
“My favorite thing about theatre is that there really is a place for everyone, no matter who you are, whether you want to be on stage, in the ensemble, or backstage working or creating. Theatre is for everyone!”
Q3: What made you want to be a teacher?
“I was at a point in college where I really needed to decide what I wanted to do, and I wanted to figure out a way that I could be on stage and direct, both things I love! And I’ve always loved teaching and seeing that “Aha” moment when someone gets something they struggled with, or seeing students shine doing what they love.”
Q4: Would you pick anything else over it?
“No, I wouldn’t, but if I wasn’t a theatre teacher, I’ve always loved English and creative writing, so I think I would do something with that.”
Thank you so much, Mrs. Lejeune, for telling me what made you want to choose theatre. I think you chose the right career! You’re a great teacher!
To students struggling to pick a career or job,
Choose what you love.
