The movie Sinners is a 2025 genre-defying blend of historical drama and horror directed by Ryan Coogler. The film stars actors like Michael B. Jordan, Jack O’Connell, Hailee Steinfeld, and newcomer Miles Canton. Although the film emphasizes horror, it also has an underlying story of cultural appropriation and exploitation. There are multiple metaphors and disguised messages throughout the movie that tell a much more detailed story than is realized by most viewers.
Sinners takes place in 1932 Mississippi, where twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, return to their hometown. The story follows their journey of opening a juke joint. The twins gather performers and musicians, like their little cousin Sammie, to join them at their grand opening. However, just around the corner is a dark presence of vampires ready to crash on the opening night.
The film carries phenomenal acting from the whole cast. Michael B. Jordan won an Oscar on March 15th for Best Actor. He performed a career-best dual performance, playing both Smoke and Stack. He incorporated precise differences between the two characters despite their identical looks. Newcomer Miles Canton acts as the twins’ younger cousin, who has a miraculous voice when singing the Blues. Actress Jayme Lawson plays Sammie’s love interest and has an astonishing voice, singing and performing at the juke joint. The film includes musical performances carrying a beautiful underlying story.
The film is focused on a wide variety of viewers. A connection can be formed by any viewer after seeing Sinners. The story has so many meaningful messages and themes of love, hurt, family, history, and many more. I personally recommend everyone watch it at least once. Whether it’s for the horror factor, the musical factor, the storyline factor, or even just the Michael B. Jordan factor. The movie is a solid 9/10; my only complaint is that I wish it were longer.
