Maleficent is a fantasy film starring the title character as a powerful fairy who protects a magical forest realm. This fairy is deemed as a rare and evil outside of her magical realm by prideful noble humans. Maleficent, a fierce protector of the realm, takes revenge on her ex-lover, Stephan, who becomes a nobleman through events shown in the movie. She decides to place a curse on his daughter, Aurora.
Unlike the original version, Maleficent starts as a victim and turns into a villain from the events that transpired following Stephen’s betrayal in the movie. In my opinion, her villainous nature is appropriate for the events she dealt with. Throughout the movie, she is portrayed as a great being ripped apart mentally. This fierce protector becomes vulnerable and lets her emotions take control of the story. Ultimately, Maleficent’s strong shell broke down, and she reinforced herself.
Angelina Jolie, acting as Maleficent, was deeply astonishing. She plays the character well. It is a story that explores themes of betrayal of innocence, as well as love and purity. Color contrasts clash with each other, making a unique color theme surrounding the film. As you watch the movie, you will be captivated by the beautiful, mystical areas shown throughout the movie.
Maleficent is a beautiful movie that I highly recommend if dark fantasy is your preferred genre. This movie transformed a Sleeping Beauty tale villain into a deeply complex and sympathetic anti-hero. The film discovers stunning visual effects and lush, magical landscapes and explores betrayal, redemption, and the nature of love.
