Hattie Thompson, Youth leader at Sam Jones Methodist Church, has been involved in youth ministry for several years. This past Wednesday I got to message her with a couple of questions regarding her job at the church. Originally from Cartersville, Hattie has moved around and found a love for youth ministry in her hometown.
How did you get started in your position?
I grew up very engaged in the church because of the difficult relationships with my parents. When I turned 16 it was a choice I got to make on my own. Lane (former youth minister) had always mentored me and strengthened my spiritual walk. Once I graduated, I was invited to intern at the church, which lead to more opportunities and eventually an interview as the new youth minister.
What is your favorite part about your job?
I enjoy going on retreats with students and spending time away from all the distractions of the world.
What makes your job difficult?
My job is planting seeds and not ever seeing the fruit of it. Sometimes it can be difficult to not see the benefit of the work being done.
If you told your younger self what you are doing, what would be her reaction/thoughts?
I would not believe it. I always said I would never go into youth ministry. I always thought I would be in missions for churches.
As you can see, when you are young you have no idea what you will be doing in the future. Find what you love, then do it. Everyone will find their passions eventually.
