On October 4th, students began meeting up in the auditorium at 11:00 a.m. for this year’s Sources of Strength Peer Training. Most students were new to the club, but some were returning members. It started with a nice introduction of students going back and forth introducing themselves stating their name, grade, and what animal they would be if they could choose.
After this, we were all spoiled with Chick-fil-A. 30 minutes later, we were split into groups where we drew pictures of all the things we turn to during stressful times. Most groups drew music, faith, sleep, family, and entertainment, such as Netflix and TikTok, along with so much more. We then shared our posters. Right after, we sat in a big circle and discussed what Sources of Strength is all about: peer leaders spreading hope, help, and strength. There are eight sources of strength, which comprise the wheel of Sources of Strength’s logo. It includes family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality, physical health, and mental health.
We then went back into our groups where we got personal with each other, discussing each section of the wheel and what that looks like for us individually. It was really empowering and special to be able to hear everyone’s different experiences. After this, everyone met up again and we played many fun games like changing three things about ourselves and seeing if your partner could notice all three, playing “fins” where you see who can put their hands together above their head the fastest when the instructor says “fins”, and having a rock, paper, scissors competition except you use your whole body instead of just your hands. These different activities allowed us to meet many new people, create unforgettable memories, and get vulnerable with each other. Being surrounded with acceptance and love was just what many of us needed, and I know I’m not the only one who was grateful for this incredible experience.
