HoPe is a non-profit organization that helps high school students build a sense of belonging. HoPe was founded in 2009 by founders Angela and David who were both undocumented students that wanted to help Hispanic high school students find their identity and find a sense of security in their community. HoPe stands for Hispanic Organization Promoting Education. There are 72 schools that have a HoPe leadership charter group. HoPe was introduced and became an official group to join at Cartersville High School in the 2022-2023 school year.
HoPe is led by charter advisors and four high school student leaders. The charter advisors for the 2023-2024 school year are Mrs. Chupp, Mrs. Rentz, Ms. Zaldivar and Senora Perez. Mrs. Chupp, when asked, said the goal for HoPe “is to keep students in school and to empower them for future education.” Cartersville High School’s percentage of Hispanic students is around 23%. HoPe is designed to help and give resources to Hispanic students to get confidence. The programs main slogan is “You belong here, always have, always will.”
This 2023-2024 school year will be HoPe’s second year at CHS and they’re excited to take on the new year. Mrs. Chupp, an advisor, says the main goal for this year is to help with community service and to start a fundraiser. Anyone is welcome to join a meeting. Meetings are held on the second to last Tuesday of every month. Meetings are only held once a month in Mrs. Chupp’s classroom in the main building, room 107. The charter advisors hope to “grow and bring Hispanic leaders from the community to give students direction.
The organization is still looking for student officers and is hoping to get them more involved in their roles than in the past year. To apply to become an officer, you must go to the HoPe website and apply through there. To become an official member of HoPe, you must go through the website as well. Anyone is welcome to become an official member of HoPe. HoPe offers a scholarship for official members.
