The show Gilmore Girls highlights the special bond between mother and daughter. Following Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, the show starts with Lorelai having Rory at a young age and deciding to leave her rich but controlling family behind. She moves to the quirky little town of Stars Hollow, wanting to raise Rory her way and give her a different life than the one she had. Lorelai keeps Rory away from her parents, Emily and Richard, to protect her from the pressures she faced growing up. But when Rory gets accepted into the prestigious Chilton Preparatory School, Lorelai realizes she can’t cover the tuition alone. So, she strikes a deal with her parents: they’ll pay for Rory’s education if Lorelai and Rory come to Friday night dinners every week. As Rory starts at Chilton, she dives into her dream of becoming a journalist. She joins the school newspaper, The Franklin, and puts her heart into it. By the time she graduates in Season 3, she’s transformed into a confident and smart young woman.
During her graduation speech, she shares something that perfectly sums up her relationship with Lorelai: “My mother never gave me any idea that I couldn’t do whatever I wanted to do or be whomever I wanted to be… As she guided me through these incredible eighteen years, I don’t know if she ever realized that the person I most wanted to be was her.” That quote hits home for me because I see a lot of my relationship with my mom in Rory and Lorelai’s journey. Like them, we’ve dealt with family struggles together. But through it all, she’s always been there for me—cheering me on, supporting me, and reminding me that I can achieve and do anything I want and dream of.
