Cartersville High School had its first competitive mock trial on Saturday, February 1st. Cartersville competed against Cambridge and Mount Paran High School by acting out a civil prosecution led by Attorney Zach Moore and Judge Samir Patel. This year, with Jack Johnson as attorney, and Brayden Yrebedra and King Williams as defendants, the Mock Trial case consisted of a liquor store owner selling alcohol to an adult at a particular time, resulting in the adult getting intoxicated and violating road safety laws, which led to an innocent pedestrian’s death. Cartersville High School earned 4th out of 8 in the regional competition and competed again for the district competition on February 22nd against Adairsville, Cambridge, and Mount Paran. Cartersville proudly placed 3rd out of 6.
Mrs. Candela, this year’s Mock Trial sponsor, gave inside information about her experience at the competition. She shared that the competitors were very talented and educated this year and put up a very serious fight. However, since this was Cartersville’s first recent mock trial, Mrs. Candela did mention that she was a little nervous and intimidated, not knowing what to expect from the competing school. Still, she had a fun time with her team and students at the end of the day.
Mrs. Candela mentioned Violet Earwood, a senior competitor; as a “lead” to the team. Violet displayed incredible confidence, intelligence, quick wit, and perfect memory – all characteristics that are incredibly involved with the success of a case. Mrs. Candela wrapped up the overall result from Carterville’s first competitive mock trial, saying that everyone did an excellent job closing the trial case and that we can expect more victories from Cartersville in the future.
