The race was expected to be great. Cartersville Cross-Country’s first 5k meet of the 2023 season could go no other way. Held at Heritage High School in Ringgold on August 28th, the course was about as ‘cross-country’ as you could get—mud, grass, brambles, hills and divots all the way to the finish. The team had conditioned harder than any previous season and were already putting in better times.
Also expected was the unfortunate weather. Continuous lighting strikes kept every runner on their buses and race times were postponed. Eventually, around 6pm, the race was scratched, and the long drive home began. With it being Monday, a few of the runners were ambivalent about not racing, others were more disappointed. Jake Hall, senior runner stated, “It sucks, but it shouldn’t affect the team’s performance.” The makeup meet will be held on Thursday the 31st.
