Homecoming in a World Pandemic

An Interview with Students about the 2020 Homecoming

Keila Flores, Writer

Homecoming is a high school dance where many enjoy having a good time with their friends.     Until A pandemic hit worldwide…

As we know already 2020 has been one whirlwind of a year. The corona virus hit worse in March then it ever has. Schools went out for about six and a half months! There have been 36,285,813 cases, 1,057,992 deaths, but at least 27,306,860 people have recovered! At first no one knew it would get this bad, and some think it is fake and as well as a hoax! No one even thought we would have to social distance from school as well.

Until we did.

This dance is originally in the storm center at Cartersville High School. The yearly dance will incredibly be different.  Some said the dance would be in the courtyard as far as we know. Of course, for the soul purpose of social distancing, we will be wearing masks. Homecoming during this worldwide pandemic is a hassle.  Homecoming is cancelled. We still have the car parade, but the dance itself is cancelled. I asked a ninth-grade student her thoughts on homecoming on her first year of high school. Then I proceeded and asked a senior how they felt since it’s their last year, and these where their responses.

How do you feel about not having a dance?

Chesney Stanley states: “It sucks that it won’t be a normal dance and instead have to be cautious and safer. But! At least I’m a freshman and have three more years and by then hopefully it’s different or at least a vaccine.”

Anon- “I mean its my senior year I have never been to a hoco dance hoping to go to this one.”

Do you think cancelling it was worth it?

Chesney – “I wish they didn’t but we are in a pandemic and when lives are at risk its serious, so it was worth it if its saving at least a life.”

Anon- “ As much as I want to say no, it was the right decision to keep us safe.”

As far as you know, are cases lowering or rising?

Chesney- “ I believe they are rising and that’s another reason we can have homecoming”

Anon- “ They are rising. With cold weather nearby its making the number of cases go up.

Do you think after hoco y’all would go back to hybrid?

Chesney-” I don’t think we will honestly”

Anon- “ I do believe we will soon maybe in a few days, weeks, or months. If our safety is at risk then yes.

If so, would you prefer hybrid?

Chesney-” No, I don’t like hybrid. I like not coming every day. But personally I don’t do my work at home nor can I learn.
