On Friday, October 5, The Cartersville Hurricanes defeated the LaGrange Grangers 45-7 at home. The Canes showcased charcoal alternate jerseys for the big game.

From the beginning, Cartersville came out firing, with multiple plays of 10 or more yards. They finished off their first drive on a high note as junior quarterback Tee Webb completed a 7 yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Kaleb Chatmon.

The Canes’ defense immediately asserted their dominance over LaGrange’s players by forcing a three and out series after a five yard loss on 2nd down, and a LaGrange penalty on 3rd and 12.

With 6:22 left in the 1st quarter, Webb completed a 31-yard pass to sophomore wideout Amarai Orr on 3rd and 13. The offense couldn’t capitalize on their second Redzone trip though, and was forced to take a 33-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0.

Cartersville continued their smother defense and kept LaGrange to three and out, leading to an 8-yard touchdown run by senior running back Marcus Gary, his 11th of the season.

The highlight of the night came in the 2nd quarter when senior linebacker Sunni Moorehead laid out LaGrange wideout Koby Patton with a huge hit on 3rd and 10. (Picture a Mack truck hitting a Little Tikes car.)

The Canes’ offense then wanted to add a highlight of their own. Before halftime, Tee Webb hit sophomore wideout Devonte Ross with a perfect 27-yard touchdown pass between two defenders in the left side of the endzone. This score gave the Canes a 24-0 lead, and full control over the game.

LaGrange had a chance to put points on the scoreboard late in the 2nd quarter, but two delay of game penalties and two incomplete passes later, the Canes got the ball back.

Cartersville cashed in on the opportunity to extend their lead. After converting on 4th and 18, Webb threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to junior Marko Dudley and headed into halftime with a 31-0 lead.

LaGrange scored immediately after halftime as they returned an interception for a touchdown, however the offense could never get any momentum. LaGrange would remain scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Cartersville scored two more times in the second half to give them a 45-7 home victory.

The Cane defense played its best game of the season thus far. LaGrange could never get the run game going and had even less success passing the ball.

This week the offense opened a little bit and the Canes looked downfield more. Cartersville still used a lot of screen passes, but they utilized their young players and were able to have a lot of success with their passing attack.

With the LaGrange win, Cartersville stands at 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in region play. They head into a tough week against Sandy Creek on the road. This game will most likely be Cartersville’s biggest test so far this season.
