Many hailed the beginning of 2017 as the year that things were going to be different. Maybe they swore they were no longer going to procrastinate. Maybe I’m talking about myself. While “new year, new me” may not be true for all of us in 2017, what is indisputable is that 2007 was officially ten years ago. As a senior, I was seven in January 2007. Freshmen were even younger, with some being as young as three when 2007 was still on the calendar. While the realization that time is passing and we are all dying washes over you, I’d like to remind you of 2007, when the radio played “Irreplaceable” by Beyonce and asked Delilah what was up in New York City.

If you’re a particular flavor of emo, you may remember that 2007 was the year that Fall Out Boy released “Infinity on High,” which gave us hits like “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race,” and “Thnks fr th Mmrs”

Speaking of mmrs, it was on June 29, 2007 that Apple released the first iPhone. That’s right, it’s been ten years of complaining about the (no) battery life.

Other musical hits from 2007 include Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” and  Rihanna’s “Shut Up and Drive” and “Umbrella”.  Though it may seem unbelievable, it was ten years ago in 2007 that Soulja Boy Tell’em released his debut single, “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”. Avril Lavigne was also a 2007 staple with her hit, “Girlfriend” which went platinum in the US and Australia. Billboard ranked the song as 12th best song of 2007. The song may have been “brilliantly addictive,” as Alex Macpherson of The Guardian put it, as well as Lavigne’s only song to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Another wonderful gift 2007 gave us was the birth of one of the longest running reality TV shows in the US: Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

iCarly also debuted in 2007, starring Miranda Cosgrove, Jennette McCurdy, and Nathan Kress. Capturing hearts, this Nickelodeon classic has been memed many times, most memorably in the lurking meme.

Other TV shows that debuted in 2007 include Phineas and Ferb, arguably the best cartoon ever created, according to me. 2007 also brought us the release of Disney Channel’s highest rating movie, High School Musical 2, which got 17.2 million views . It seems like only yesterday Zac Efron was a teenage heartthrob, which is dramatically different from the way he is today.

Yep, totally not attractive anymore.

In addition to giving us Gabriela and Troy to swoon over, 2007 had its fair share of love. In 2007, Rihanna and Shia LaBeouf went on exactly one date. Here is the link, if you don’t believe me, in which he tells MTV all about the romance. It is also in this interview (which took place in 2009) that he said he would date his own mother. You know, if she weren’t already his mom. Hearts were also broken in 2007, as it was the year that Nick Cannon and Kim Kardashian broke up.

In 2007, Donald Trump was in the ring. No, not the political ring, but World Wrestling Entertainment ring. Who would’ve thought that the man who shaved another man’s head on television for a bet would become America’s 45th president?

Also, don’t forget that in 2007, Taylor Swift looked like this.

So wholesome. So young.

This is Patrick Stump now, talk about mmrs.
